Sheet metal punching

Sheet metal punching

CNC punching, perforating, forming, nibbling

Sheet metal punching is performed with the leading technological equipment of the Trumpf brand.
The main characteristics that define sheet metal punching are:

  • CNC program which enables quick response to changes in customer needs
  • Up to 21 punching tools (per program), which can be complemented by multi-digit tools (multi-tools)
  • Cost-effectiveness already with batches from 100 pieces onward
  • Sheet metal punching with accuracy of up to 0.02 mm
  • Processing of material in plates for dimensions of up to 1500x3000mm
  • Processing of material with the thickness of up to of 3mm, for stainless steel up to 2mm

We have a wide range of traditional punching tools, special shapes and forming tools which we can use to make nozzles, threads, drilling, bridges, vent slots, positioning humps…

Forming tools for sheet metal punching are preferred because they enable the user an easier installation of products and thus faster and more efficient manufacturing. Our expertise and set of tools is constantly being upgraded, therefore, we are constantly confirming the status of the great provider of sheet metal punching services.

SHEET METAL PUNCHING IN SAX KONSTRUKCIJE COMPANY

Sheet metal punching defines a slitting process, in which a punching machine or press separates a sheet of metal by striking it.
Punching is a mechanic process in which a sheet is perforated by a single stroke of the machine. Individual hit can produce shapes such as circular holes or outer contours. Due to the way sheets are cut, a process is classified also as a shearing operation. Shearing is the result of placing a sheet between an upper tool (punch) and a lower tool (die) with opposite movement.
Punching process consist of four basic phases. At first machine strikes the tool toward the metal sheet, causing it’s bending. Then the punch begins cutting into the sheet. The stress inside the metal continues to build, until the sheet finally fractures along the contour of the cut. The so called slug (part that is punched out) is ejected on the opposite side to the one where tool enters the material. When the punch is raised again, the sheet may be pulled up with the punch. In that case, a stripper frees the sheet from the punch.

Sheet metal punching and edge quality

The greater the proportion of the sheet edge that is cut instead of fractured, the better the edge quality will be. One way to improve the cut-fracture ratio of a high-precision fit, for example, is to make an initial hole and then use a slightly larger tool to produce the final hole with the required diameter. Up to 100% of the edge created in this way is actually cut.

Unlimited capabilities of punching

Despite their name, punch presses today are used for much more than just plain sheet metal punching and shouldn’t really be referred to as punching machines anymore. The classic sheet perforation methods of sheet metal punching and sheet metal nibbling have been joined by an array of other techniques that include forming, tapping, and other processes like bending small tabs or the marking of workpieces.

Variety of different punching techniques allow manufacturers to perform wide range of operations and work on sheet metal to achieve outstanding results and produce the finest sheet metal parts. Here are some of them, which all we will soon describe in our blog.
